Interview Preparation: Structure Beats Improvisation

Use one structure for every competency answer

Competency questions ask you to describe something you have actually done. A simple four-part structure keeps answers under two minutes and easy to follow: the situation, your task, the specific actions you took, and the result — including what you learned.

Prepare six to eight real examples rather than memorised scripts. Most question themes can be answered from a well-chosen example set.

• A time you handled an upset customer.
• A time you worked with a difficult colleague.
• A time you followed a rule that was inconvenient.
• A time you made a mistake and corrected it.
• A time you helped someone who did not ask for help.
• A time you worked under time pressure with limited information.

Expect these themes

Wording varies, but the underlying assessment areas are stable across the industry: safety awareness, service recovery, teamwork, adaptability, cultural sensitivity, resilience and motivation.

Interviewers are listening for whether you describe your own actions in the first person, whether you respect procedure, and whether you can be brief.

Prepare your motivation answer properly

"Why cabin crew?" is not a warm-up question. Answer it in three moves: the responsibility that genuinely attracts you, one concrete piece of evidence from your own experience, and an honest acknowledgement of what the lifestyle actually involves.

Avoid answers built only on travel, glamour or benefits. They are the most common answers given and the easiest to discount.

Practise out loud, then cut

Record yourself answering three questions, then listen once. Most candidates find the same two issues: answers that run past two minutes and answers that describe the team instead of the individual. Cut background detail, keep the actions.
